| New Hampshire's Merrimack Valley and Seacoast Region
|
| New Hampshire's Merrimack Valley and Seacoast provide breathtaking views and offer over 350 years of tradition and history that adds texture and color to an already beautiful state. Start your tour in the region along Apple Way, a scenic byway in Londonderry that is sprinkled with charming old schoolhouses, antique homesteads and five magnificent apple orchards. Visit old Dutton Farm, Londonderry's first maple syrup producer, which still taps its maples every spring. Just down the road in Derry, see the Robert Frost Farm and the gorgeous views he described in his poetry. Head east toward Exeter, the state's capital during the Revolutionary War. Immerse yourself in history with a visit to the American Independence Museum and walk to the earliest surviving building in town, Gilman Garrison. Shop in the downtown historic district or take a walking tour through Phillips Exeter Academy. Continue your day trip along scenic Route 1A to enjoy the spectacular views offered by the 18-mile drive beside the ocean and stop at Fort Constitution in New Castle, where the first aggressive act of the Revolution took place. Then head north to Dover and visit the Woodman Institute, an organization promoting local education in science, history and the arts. Often considered one of the "state's best, but least known scientific treasures," the Woodman Institute contains extensive collections of minerals, mammals, Native American items, and more. While in Dover, take time to see America's oldest family farm. Tuttle's Farm not only offers a taste of history, it also boasts a wide array of locally grown produce and offers some of the region's finest breads at its bakery. |
| New Hampshire's Lakes, White Mountains and Great North Woods Regions
|
| No one can resist the majesty and satisfaction of the great outdoors offered in New Hampshire's Lakes and White Mountains regions. As you head north toward the White Mountains, be sure to visit the 72-square-mile Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in the state. From swimming and fishing, to cruise ships, boat tours and nature centers, Lake Winnipesaukee has it all. Be sure to visit the Castle on the Clouds, a 5,400-acre estate in Moultonborough with more than 85 miles of private trails. Take a fascinating tour of the Castle's bottling plant, the source of its famous Castle Springs mountain spring water. Continue north and catch the bargains at the North Conway Outlets in tax-free New Hampshire, with over 200 shops stretching a mile long. Soak in the beauty of the Mt. Washington valley by riding the Conway Scenic Railroad. After the train ride, bask in what many consider the world's best views as you head west along the Kancamagus scenic byway. While traveling that route, take the time to slide down a natural water slide created by slippery rocks and swim in the pool at the base of Lower Falls. Whether you want to go horseback riding along the scenic Saco River or slide down the longest Alpine Slides in North America, there is always plenty of activity at Attitash Bear Peak. In Lincoln, spend some time watching the black bear show and other exciting performances at Clark's Trading Post. Don't miss Franconia Notch State Park and an opportunity to witness the incredible waterfall at the Basin, along with the marvelous views offered at the Flume Gorge. |
| New
Hampshire's Connecticut Valley |
| Over 100 years of history, tradition and family fun can be found in New Hampshire's Connecticut Valley Loop in the southwestern corner of the state. Part of the region's appeal is the charming rustic feeling found at the old churches and town halls in the small villages. Start your trip in this scenic area in Jaffrey and visit Mt. Monadnock, the second most climbed mountain in the world. The mountain has 40 miles of trails and offers a stunning view of six other states on a clear day. In fact, the view is so beautiful, it inspired Ralph Waldo Emerson to write the poem "Monadnock" after climbing it. Head north to Peterborough and soak in the incredible artwork featured at the Sharon Arts Center. The galleries feature artworks of regional and nationally acclaimed artists that are sure to captivate visitors. The world's widest Main Street can be found in Keene, a bustling college town with a shopping center for the entire region. Stop along the Ashuelot River and walk or drive through one of several covered bridges that span the river. The Ashuelot Bridge is considered New Hampshire's most elaborate covered bridge and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Explore the footpaths along the Chesterfield Gorge Natural Area and spend some quality family time hiking through the dense forest at Pisgah State Park. A trip to the Rhododendron State Park in Fitzwilliam around mid-July will provide a sight unlike any other. This National Natural Landmark displays more than 16 acres of wild Rhododendron blossoms around that time and is one of the largest tracts of the hardy shrub north of the Allegheny Mountains. |
