Fonthill

(Doylestown) The spectacular home of Henry Mercer, Fonthill is a grand castle built entirely of hand-mixed concrete. It has 44 rooms, 18 fireplaces, 32 stairwells and more than 200 windows of every size and shape. The lavishly embellished interior surfaces show an incredible array of Mercer's original decorative tiles. Well worth the trip-even for the second or third time. Mon-Sat 10-5, Sun 12-5

Moravian Tile Works

(Doylestown) A working history museum and National Historic Landmark, the building itself reflects the Spanish influence on mission architecture. See Mercer tiles being produced by original methods. Self-guided tours. Unique and fascinating. Daily 10-4:45pm.

Campobello Island

(Doylestown) In this incredible tower-like castle, you'll find dramatic displays of the furnishings, folk art and implements of early America. The striking building, 7 stories tall and constructed entirely of reinforced concrete, is a National Historic Landmark. (It would also make a great set for a Frankenstein movie!) Mon-Sat 10-5, Tues 10-9, Sun 12-5.

James Michener Museum

(Doylestown) A wonderful small art museum. Works by Pennsylvania impressionists, 19th and 20th century art, sculpture, as well as changing exhibitions. Tues-Fri 10-4:30, Sat & Sun 10-5.

Pearl S. Buck House

(Perkasie, PA, near Doylestown) "One of the most beautiful day trips you can take", according to Philadelphia Magazine. The wonderful 1835 stone farmhouse where the Pulitzer and Nobel prize winning novelist and humanitarian lived with her family for 38 years. Tues-Sat 11-2.
